Following numerous inquiries from tourism stakeholders and news outlets in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, a Jimna Fire Tower Action Group JFTAG deputation toured the adjacent Conondale National Park and Mary Valley regions on Thursday 7/12/06.Departing Jimna at 8am via Sunday Creek Road and arriving back at 6pm via Mt Buggery (yes Jimna is possibly the only place in Australia where you can literally go to buggery),the party enjoyed magnificent diverse scenery and views from the native hardwood and rain forests of the Jimna and Conondale Ranges to the beautiful salad bowl farmlands of the Mary Valley, highlighted by the serene charm of Kenilworth, Amamoor, Kandanga, and Imbil.
The tropical setting at Booloumba Creek Camping Grounds, followed by the wonderful displays at the Gympie Woodworks and Gold Mining Museums, plus a visit to the Valley Rattler are just a few of the many attractions in this historic and tourist rich area. Tourist brochures were exchanged at all information centres and many business houses along the way, where the Jimna Fire Tower’s role as a valuable tourist destination received absolute unanimous support.

December 4th, 2006
The recent announcement of a $5 million heritage conservation fund by the Heritage Minister Lindy Nelson- Carr, may be  great news for the Heritage Listed Jimna Fire Tower which is threatened with demolition, due to lack of money available for maintenance. Remember the main reason given by Forestry Plantations Queensland FPQ for terminating the towers maintenance program, was that money spent on upkeep was considered to be a waste, because fire surveillance is now performed by camera.
Â
It is worth noting that this funding is provided to give struggling owners of heritage listed places some relief from maintenance costs, which places the Jimna fire tower in the untenable position where the current owners, FPQ ,who have repeatedly stated that their core business does not include maintenance of the heritage listed Jimna fire tower, appears to be prevented from accessing this welcome heritage funding.
Â
Many letters, faxes, phone calls, meetings, media releases, petitions, appeals by email and website information over the past six months, involving the Queensland State Government, the National Trust of Qld, the Qld Heritage Council, Forestry Plantations Qld, and the Qld Parks & Wildlife Service, appears to have resulted in the future fate of the Jimna fire tower being determined by the Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries the Honourable Tim Mulherin MP.
Â
The Jimna Fire Tower Action Group JFTAG unreservedly appeals to Mr Mulherin to consolidate his Governments commitment to the preservation of Queensland Heritage Culture, by ruling to ensure that all options to the demolition of the Jimna fire tower be evaluated without further delay. This popular tourist icon with such undeniable tourism potential, surely deserves better treatment than what it has received thus far.

Apologies to those Jimna Fire Tower Supporters who do not receive this weeks update on time by Email. Due to an unprecedented occurrence of virus attacks, power failures, and on line technical faults with our Secretary’s computer at Jimna, J.F.T.A.G are experiencing difficulty in processing normal functions. Hopefully all will return to normal in the not so distant future with service work currently underway.
While J.F.T.A.G waits for some indication from the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) as to where and how the Jimna Fire Tower issue is being addressed by the Queensland Government, we continue to promote Public awareness and register Public support both locally and throughout South East Queensland. J.F.T.A.G can only speculate that no news is good news, and that the Tower will be secure and safe over the Christmas Holidays, as promised by the Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries, the Hon. Tim. Mulherin M.P.

Peach Trees Day Use Area and Camping Grounds provide an ideal central location for visitors to discover the myriad of tracks and forest drives that traverse the Jimna State Forest and Conondale National Park.

The recent publication titled Queensland’s Parks and Forests, which was produced by the Environmental Protection Agency, has linked the Conondale National Park and Jimna State Forest with the Fraser and Sunshine Coast tourism areas. When studying this extremely graphic and beautiful presentation, with its strong emphasis on the protection of our Cultural Heritage, the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) remains hopeful that the government departments involved will see fit to recognise the Heritage Listed Jimna Fire Tower as a worthy contributor to Queensland Cultural Heritage.
With this added confidence on board, a JFTAG deputation travelled to Caloundra on Tuesday 14/11/06, to attend a series of meetings aimed at testing support and discussing solutions for the campaign to redevelop the Jimna Fire Tower into a Tourist Destination. First stop was a reciprocal visit to the Caloundra Lighthouse, where a comprehensive Lighthouse redevelopment overview was presented, along with words of support from a Caloundra Shire Council representative. Member for Caloundra, Mark Mcardle MP., then hosted a meeting where the significance of the Jimna Fire Tower and its potential as a major Tourist Destination in South East Queensland was enthusiastically endorsed in principal. After promotional stops at several Tourist Information Centres, the JFTAG party headed home contented with a day well spent, and encouraged by the warm reception and interest encountered at Caloundra.
Endeavours to generate wider media coverage is steadily reaping rewards, with several outlets showing interest and visitor levels to Jimna on the rise. As we continue to wait patiently for news from the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the proposed engineering review, JFTAG urges currently registered supporters to promote the campaign to save the Jimna Fire Tower at the workplace, office and among friends.

It is encouraging to report this week, that the Queensland Government Department currently legally responsible for the Jimna Fire Tower, that is; Forestry Plantations Queensland FPQ, has assured the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group JFTAGÂ that a regular maintenance schedule is in place for the upkeep of the tower site grounds. This assurance was given in reply to JFTAG concerns that, with the growing season upon us, and without regular mowing etc the tower site was in danger of becoming overgrown and unsightly. This action by FPQ is seen by JFTAG as an indication, that the spirit of co-operation initially sought in the quest to have every alternative to demolition of the tower evaluated, is now being demonstrated and appreciated.Â
Also encouraging is the visitor interest being generated by the plight of the Jimna Fire Tower, in particular the increasing number of camp site bookings being made at nearby Peach Trees Camping Grounds, which is swelling the coffers of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service QPWLS. The realization of the tremendous income producing potential of the Jimna Fire Tower when redeveloped as a tourist attraction, surely must require our decision makers to reexamine the towers future financial viability, not only as a self funded destination but its added benefit to tourism in south east Queensland.Â
Through this article JFTAG calls on the Queensland Government Minister for Environment and Heritage the Honourable Lindy Nelson/Carr to expedite the process by which the Queensland Heritage Council is currently considering the proposed Jimna Fire Tower engineering review. JFTAG is in receipt of guidelines for funding under the Australian Governments  National Heritage Investment Initiative NHII, which offers $10.5 million over four years, to help restore and conserve Australia’s most important Heritage Places, but until the Queensland Government shows genuine commitment towards the preservation of Queensland Heritage Places like the Jimna Fire Tower, then this funding opportunity is either delayed or lost.
Its official !! Jimna has been branded ” THE CAMPING AND OFF ROAD CAPITAL OF SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND” .Treat yourself and family to an intimate interlude with nature by planning a visit over the coming holiday season, check out the diverse range of camping grounds surrounding the Jimna State Forest and Conondale National Park

This weeks news update is dedicated to Penny Cook, Executive Director of the National Trust of Queensland, who is retiring. Since first hearing of the plight of the Jimna Fire Tower, and becoming aware of the formation of the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG), Penny has not only become a passionate supporter, but her ongoing advice and expertise has been instrumental in helping JFTAG negotiate the myriad of protocols that can easily become pitfalls when dealing with government departments.Â
Penny’s intimate knowledge of heritage legislation and her willingness to share, has given JFTAG a clearer understanding of an apparent weakness in the present Heritage Act which has put the Jimna Fire Tower at risk, and has the potential to threaten other Heritage Listed places.Â
It is JFTAG’s understanding that the current Heritage Act in Queensland is fundamentally flawed in that it does not require government departments to either identify, maintain or protect heritage listed places under their control. This revelation is quiet unbelievable when considering the constant and just call for all cultures that enrich modern Australian society to be respected and preserved. The Jimna Fire Tower represents part of Australian culture, heritage and history. It is a symbol of respect and appreciation for the sacrifice and toil of the workers who built it and who created  the massive national  pine plantation estate, which now provides so many of us with both recreational enjoyment and employment.Â
May the ever increasing public support for the preservation of the Jimna Fire Tower be a catalyst that will inspire decision makers from all government departments involved to call for a review of the Queensland Heritage Act - an event that will no doubt bring great satisfaction to Penny Cook in retirement.

After laying rumours of suggested white ant infestation to rest in last weeks Jimna Fire Tower News Update the following important question needs to be addressed. Q - If people support the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG), to help save the tower, are they joining a protest group?. A - JFTAG is definitely not a protest group or anything like it. We simply are a publicly appointed committee with a clear objective - “to ensure that all possible alternatives to demolition of the Jimna Fire Tower are evaluated”. JFTAG is currently successfully establishing a group of professional advisors, who have generously volunteered to assist during future consultation with relevant government departments who are currently responsible for the tower and site. JFTAG is committed to dealing with both Forestry Plantations Queensland (FPQ) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) in a controlled and professional manner, focussing on delivering a beneficial outcome for all.Â
It is our understanding that the reason these government departments wanted to get rid of the Jimna Fire Tower was purely economic. Spending money on maintenance with nil return, understandably, does not fit within their operational charter, because the core business of both FPQ and QPWS does not include redeveloping defunct facilities into tourist attractions. Once these facts are understood the role of JFTAG, in trying to find a feasible alternative to demolition of this Heritage Listed Tourist Icon, becomes clearly defined.Â
JFTAG, with strong public support, has an obligation to convince all levels of government and stakeholders that a redeveloped Jimna Fire Tower has the potential to be of economic benefit to everybody. To date there have been dozens of good reasons to suggest that the previous statement is widely recognised, while in comparison, not one good reason to refute this ideology has been recorded. JFTAG reiterates its intention to move this matter forward with all stakeholders in a spirit of cooperation and rational dialogue.  Next JFTAG meeting will be held Friday November 10th, 10am, at “Jack’s Place”, Mary St., Kilcoy – all welcome. Dave Wright, Secretary.

Following on from last weeks extremely informative and enlightening meeting with principals of the Caloundra Lighthouse redevelopment committee, the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) has received added positive public responses to the technical matters dicussed concerning the proposed redevelopment of the Jimna Fire Tower into a tourist attraction. Workplace health and public safety issues have attracted much interest with a range of possible solutions being collated for future professional analysis.Â
While JFTAG awaits details of the proposed Queensland Heritage Council (QHC) engineering review, this is an opportune time to allay some of the myths that have been allowed to circulate, and to answer some of the most frequently asked questions, for example:
Q1 – Is the Jimna Fire Tower currently or has it ever been affected by white ant infestation?  A1 -There is no official previous evidence, or any indication by recent expert observation that white ants have ever been or currently are active.
Q2 - Being heritage listed does that mean that the Jimna Fire Tower is old and in disrepair?  A2 - Not at all, in fact the tower was built in 1977 making it just 29 years old, and although some weathering has occurred due to lack of maintenance, there has been minimal structural impact.
Q3 - Why does the government want to demolish the tower? A3 -The Jimna Fire Tower is no longer used for plantation fire detection as this duty is now carried out by camera surveillance. Â

Talks over recent weeks concerning the restoration of the Caloundra Lighthouse, and its future management as a tourist destination, has revealed striking similarities with the proposed redevelopment of the Jimna Fire Tower. Both structures were government owned; each facility became an unwanted maintenance liability as their original use was superseded by modern technology, resulting in both structures being condemned to the scrap heap. A combination of heritage and historical significance, public awareness, community support and eventual government assistance has been the ingredients of success for the dedicated Caloundra Lighthouse committee.
The Jimna Fire Tower Action Group, (JFTAG), were honoured by the attendance of Roger Todd and Vic Godley at our Friday meeting at Kilcoy (13/10/06 ), where many topics experienced by the lighthouse project were discussed. Roger, who is an architect, and Vic, who is a civil engineer, both displayed a sincere passion for Australian Heritage and History and have generously offered to share their extensive knowledge with JFTAG, a gesture for which we shall be eternally grateful. A varied range of issues confronting the future of the Jimna Fire Tower were tabled including structural assessment, architectural design, workplace health & safety, structural certification, financial feasibility, tenure control, infrastructure transfer, risk assessment, legal liability, as well as project management.
Before our guests proceeded to Jimna for an onsite inspection, JFTAG was delighted to acknowledge Roger and Vic’s agreement to act as advisors during forthcoming consultation with the Queensland Heritage Council regarding the proposed engineering review of the Jimna Fire Tower. Observations on site confirmed JFTAG’S long held belief that alternatives to demolition of this Heritage Listed Tourist Icon are well worth assessing, and judging by the exhilarating expressions of interest from our visitors, who were left in awe of the towers’ sheer magnificence, it is certain that the Jimna Fire Tower has inspired further professional support.

As the Jimna Fire Tower story reaches a wider audience through our recently established WEB SITE, it is extremely encouraging for the volunteer committee of the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) to now be receiving daily requests from supporters to be added to our email list, as well as some much welcome suggestions. JFTAG absolutely guarantees that email addresses are kept strictly private and are only used for the purpose of sending regular news updates concerning developments in our quest to put into place a feasible alternative to demolition of this popular tourist destination. Â
Although the towers’ future is currently under review by several Queensland State Government Departments, and we patiently await replies to letters and submissions sent, JFTAG must continue to generate PUBLIC SUPPORT by getting our message to the previous 30,000 PLUS visitors annually who have experienced the exhilaration of climbing the Jimna Fire Tower, and the wonder of the 360 degree panorama stretching as far as the Queensland coastline. JFTAG hopes that public awareness is accelerated by  passing on our WEB SITE and EMAIL details to neighbours, friends and workmates, with an invitation to register by email thereby creating an influential and essential PUBLIC SUPPORTER BASE. Â
Public suggestions of what additions and facilities may ultimately convert the current structure into a commercially viable tourist attraction range from the worlds longest water slide, bungee jumping, abseiling, ferris wheel, chair lift etc., most of which would not be practical, however JFTAG at present is convinced that the tower, made publicly safe for climbing, will provide sufficient attraction in itself. The variety of ideas collated to date regarding a structurally strengthened tower with a number of public safety features, would obviously require professional assessment.Â
