ACKNOWLEDGMENTS AND APPRECIATION OF TOWERING SUPPORT

April 2nd, 2007

Every so often it is fitting to reflect on achievements, and acknowledge those individuals, businesses, bodies and groups, who have and are continuing to contribute their support for the preservation of the Jimna Fire Tower. The Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG), is deeply touched by the passion demonstrated by the many individuals who have emailed messages of support, but in thanking you all very much, it must be emphasised that the job is far from completed. The best possible way that each and every member of our ever-growing supporter base can help at this point in time, is to recruit new supporters by spreading the word amongst family, at the office or workplace, or better still, organise a few friends, pack a picnic lunch and treat them to a day in the great outdoors at Jimna.

JFTAG acknowledges Forestry Plantations Queensland (FPQ) for their continued maintenance of the tower site. Recent slashing and a little rain has produced a green cover of grass, which more appropriately portrays the site as a picnic spot unequalled in beauty and with unparalleled views. To the Kilcoy Shire Council for their cooperation and assistance in not only recognising the Jimna Fire Tower in the revised edition of the Kilcoy Shire Tourist Guide, but also more accurately describing the current status of the campaign to preserve it.

To Tourism Queensland through Brisbane Marketing, which is a partner in the development of tourism in South East Queensland Country, for including the Jimna Fire Tower on it’s mailing list and allowing JFTAG to submit feedback to their Destination Management Plan, thereby registering the Jimna Fire Tower on the Queensland tourism agenda. Thank you also to the Conondale Range Committee for donating their wonderful publication, “Walking On The Wilder Side In The Conondales”, which is a graphic illustration of the campaign to “preserve the Conondales”, it’s subsequent success, and it’s connection with the Jimna Ranges and Tourist attractions, such as the Peach Trees Camping Area and the Jimna Fire Tower.

Last but not least a big thank you to Fantastic Reproductions of Caboolture, for their efforts over and above the call of duty, in producing  the Jimna Walking Track Maps, which will be available at the Jimna Visitor Information Centre for the first of the BIG WALKS FOR JIMNA FIRE TOWER on Easter Sunday.

BUMPER EASTER CAMPERS PREDICTED FOR JIMNA

March 26th, 2007

While Forestry Plantations Queensland (FPQ) continue to assess public safety, repair costings, and possible new ownership options for the Jimna Fire Tower, signs are promising for a big turn out of campers at Jimna’s popular Peach Trees Camping Area over the Easter long weekend. The number of visitors checking out possible camp sites over recent weeks has been very strong, along with members of the public wishing to support the campaign to preserve the Jimna Fire Tower which all adds up to an expected bumper weekend. Preparation for the first of three BIG WALKS FOR JIMNA FIRE TOWER, which will take place on Easter Sunday, is well under way. Track markers will guide walkers around a choice of dozens of walking tracks, all varying in length and levels of difficulty, and souvenir maps will also be available at the Jimna Visitor Information Centre.

The Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) sincerely thanks local business and tourist operators, Searle’s Garden Products, the Kilcoy Exchange Hotel, and Somerset Valley Wines for their generous sponsorship of the Easter Sunday, Labour Day Sunday and Queens Birthday Sunday BIG WALKS, which will provide attractive prizes for fund raising raffles. A reminder that on each of these public awareness promotional days JFTAG will be conducting a food and refreshment stall at the Jimna Visitor Information Centre which is located right opposite Bellbird Park, Jimna, where a spacious off street parking area has been set aside.

Bear in mind that day visitors or campers choosing to plan a trip to Jimna during the quieter times, such as through the week, or on normal weekends, are most welcome, and will, if that way inclined, be able to enjoy all of the above while registering your support for the Jimna Fire Tower. PS - don’t forget your mountain bike as there are great areas for this popular activity, as well as passive family off roading, for which permits to traverse are no longer necessary.

HEART ATTACK INSPIRES RESOLVE TO PRESERVE JIMNA FIRE TOWER

March 19th, 2007

Without in any way attempting to gain sympathy or notoriety from my nasty experience of suffering a heart attack on Saturday 10th March 07, I wish to use this extremely dangerous and traumatising event to highlight the need for all of us to become aware of the risk factors, act immediately to have your ticker tested, and adjust your lifestyle habits accordingly. My sincerest thanks to Geoff Pattie for getting me into Jimna after belting his vehicle through thick lantana and logs, to the Mogg family of Wacol who swiftly drove me to Kilcoy, to Dr Mark Weller, RN Rose, and the wonderful staff of Kilcoy Hospital, to the fantastic doctors and staff of Prince Charles Hospital and last but by no means least, to my dear wife Barbara, family, and friends for the many messages of concern and support.

The positive message from this twist of fate, is that it happened while preparing existing walking tracks, which have become neglected, to not only complement the campaign to preserve the Jimna Fire Tower, but to also promote the natural attractions of the Jimna area. The Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) unerringly believes, that the rim of mountains surrounding the major growth areas of South East Queensland, stretching in an arc from the New South Wales Border, taking in the Toowoomba Range, the Bunya Mountains, and the Jimna and Conondale Ranges, will be increasingly called upon to provide forest recreation for the burgeoning population of this region.

All of these areas have their nature orientated individual attractions and features such as Rain Forest Walks, Deep Gorges, Waterfalls, Fresh Mountain Streams, and the abundant wildlife that thrives in their unique environments, but none have the tallest Fire Tower in the Southern Hemisphere - the Heritage Listed Jimna Fire Tower, with views to Moreton Bay. Ever-growing public support and corporate interest has revealed the possibility of  combining disused Government buildings in Jimna, with other infrastructure that is suffering from lack of maintenance, into a total package for redevelopment into a Tourist Destination, with the Jimna Fire Tower as the centre piece attraction. This proposition appears to have much merit, and is now firmly entrenched in JFTAG’s strategic plan as an option worth further consideration.

Although slightly under prepared, JFTAG’s first public awareness day Sunday 18/03/07 saw a steady stream of visitors coming and going throughout a picture perfect autumn day. Many thanks to ex Jimna-ites John  Webber from Nanango, Grace Hopkinson who travelled from Maidenwell, along with Bill & Sylvia Justo from Burpengary who entertained with fantastic reminiscing and stories of early life at Jimna.

COMING EVENTS: BIG WALKS FOR JIMNA FIRE TOWER – Easter Sunday 8/04/07, Labour Day weekend, Sunday 6/05/07, Queens Birthday weekend, Sunday 10/06/07.

FUND RAISING AND PUBLIC AWARENESS EVENTS

March 5th, 2007

While the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) awaits concurrence from Forestry Plantations Queensland (FPQ), regarding the “memorandum of understanding” from the 19/01/07 FPQ/JFTAG meeting, JFTAG is focusing on planing a program of fund raising and public awareness events. It is important to note that these events are not flag waving rallies, they are not protest or demonstration forums, but are intended to be peaceful, fun, family occasions, that may inspire Mums and Dads to plan an adventure into the beautiful Conondale National Park/Jimna State Forest Area.

JFTAG has officially endorsed the following calendar of events for readers to chose, and don’t forget slip slop slap and good footwear if participating in any of the walks. While social clubs and bus groups are most welcome, JFTAG would be grateful to receive prior email notice regarding numbers wishing to facilitate the sausage sizzles for catering purposes.

“BIG DAY OUT FOR JIMNA FIRE TOWER”

February 26th, 2007

Following the resounding success of the Channel Nine Brisbane Extra Television Coverage, and the Ride for Jimna Fire Tower, the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) has responded to solid supporter request to promote similar public awareness events. JFTAG is also extremely grateful for the many offers of assistance during any organised function or event, so if the day suits and you are available to help in any way at all, please call Rhonda Affoo on PH  5497 1878 – you will be made very welcome.

After careful consideration for the long weekends and school holidays coming up soon, JFTAG is proud to announce that Sunday the 18th of March 2007 has been selected to promote a “BIG DAY OUT FOR JIMNA FIRE TOWER”. It is envisaged that the day will provide families and friends the opportunity to plan a day excursion, that can embrace not only a stop at the Jimna Fire Tower, but also visit nearby attractions such as Peach Trees Camping Grounds, Landcruiser Mountain Park, a return route through Conondale National Park Tourist Drive via Sunday Creek road, maybe coffee at historic Kenilworth or alternative shopping at Maleny, with the added bonus of enjoying the myriad of beauty spots along the way. For the more adventurous, the drive via Mt Buggery to Barumba Dam and Imbil, where the popular tourist steam train, “The Mary Valley Rattler” (a fantastic treat for the kids), can be seen at Imbil station between 12noon and 1pm each and every Sunday, is certainly worthy of inclusion in any itinerary.

For the thirsty and hungry, the JFTAG committee will be conducting a fund raising BIG SAUSAGE SIZZLE at the Jimna Visitor Information Centre, 4 Currawong St., Jimna, situated right across the road from Bellbird Park, Jimna, (where plenty of off road parking will be available), subject to local council approval. The sausage sizzle will also provide a cold drink, or if preferred a hot cuppa, and will be operating from 10am till 2pm to cater for late breakfast, a light lunch or a quick snack on the way home. So there you go, treat your family to a great day out in the great outdoors and at the same time you will be supporting a very worthy cause.

HOGS BRIGHTEN A DAMP DAY FOR JIMNA FIRE TOWER

February 19th, 2007

Despite persistent showers causing depleted numbers and some itinerary changes , some fifty gleaming Harley Davidson motorcycles descended upon Jimna on Sunday 18/02/07, participating in the ride for Jimna Fire Tower. For an event that was on the brink of being postponed, the turnout was extremely impressive, providing visitors and locals alike with scenes never witnessed in Jimna before. The usual sounds of chainsaws, timber trucks, or FWD vehicles echoing through the Jimna Ranges, were temporarily replaced by the trademark throb of the Harley engines, which were eerily heard from Jimna, as soon as they topped the Jimna range five kilometres away.

The assembly of bikes and bodies at the Jimna visitor information centre for morning tea was truly spectacular, with a monetary value of machinery estimated to be in excess of two million dollars. Members of the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) were joined by visitors and locals alike, to mingle with and welcome our guests, providing an exciting atmosphere, and a significant show of support for the Jimna Fire Tower. JFTAG wishes to sincerely thank the Sunshine Coast Harley Owners Group, the HOGS, for initiating and providing this memorable event, along with the JFTAG committee members, partners, and local helpers who pitched in to provide a hearty morning tea.

After an excitingly noisy and fond farewell, while parading through Jimna town, it was off for a video and photo shoot, where the group paid homage to our Heritage Listed Tourist Icon, the Jimna Fire Tower. JFTAG is under no allusion of the fact that it is events like this, and the ever increasing public support, that will eventually encourage decision makers to invest in our Heritage instead of negatively attempting to destroy it.

MOTORCYCLE RIDE FOR JIMNA FIRE TOWER

February 12th, 2007

Between 70 and 100 Harley Davidson motorcycles are destined to gather at Jimna on Sunday 18th February 07 in support of the campaign to save the Jimna Fire Tower. Event organisers, Ross McKay and Ron Strong from the Sunshine Coast Harley Owners Group, otherwise known as the Sunshine Coast HOGS, started planning the ride almost immediately upon hearing of the demolition threat to the tower, and hope that other recreational groups may consider an excursion of support to Jimna.

The Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) will host morning tea, and sincerely thanks the HOGS for their generosity in offering the ride as a fund raiser for the tower. Although final details of the exact route are to be advised, the ride will pass through Kilcoy twice, with a short stop on the return journey around midday.

JFTAG also sincerely thanks everybody who turned up last Thursday for the Channel Nine  Brisbane Extra film shoot and interviews. It was a monumental turning point with regard to public exposure into Brisbane. The TV crew, headed by Presenter Doug Murray, were genuinely amazed by the imposing nature of the tower structure, the magnificent views from the site and were deeply moved by the passionate appeal for the tower to be preserved from all those interviewed, especially the builder of the Jimna Fire Tower 80 year old Arthur Leis from Nambour.

Future plans for promotion and fund raising include car rally’s, camping weekends etc,. JFTAG invites any suggestions or ideas from anybody out there, especially those who belong to a club or a group, or from those who simply enjoy the great outdoors

CHANNEL NINE TV CAMERAS COMING TO JIMNA

February 5th, 2007

The campaign to save the Jimna Fire Tower has attracted television interest from Brisbane, with Channel Nine’s Brisbane Extra crew scheduled to visit Jimna on Thursday the 8th of February 2007. Brisbane Extra presenter, Doug Murray, has expressed interest in the Jimna Fire Tower’s Heritage significance, it’s value to the local community and it’s popularity as a Tourist Destination, and is keen to interview people who have experienced the exhilarating climb and panoramic view.

The Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) will host the visit, with representatives from a broad section of community groups generously giving of their time, including the builders of the tower, Arthur Leis and his son Garry, who will travel from Nambour. Special thanks to Arthur and Garry and also to Bill Hauritz Executive Director of the Woodford Folk Festival, who also has found time to attend. JFTAG expects this Channel Nine visit to inspire other media outlets to become pro active to the tower’s demolition threat, as well as providing long overdue exposure of the issue to the general public of South East Queensland.

Other good news is that an article featuring the Jimna Fire Tower is due to appear in the February edition of the National Trust of Queensland’s Newsletter.

NEW ENGINEERING REPORT CONFIRMS JIMNA FIRE TOWER CAN BE PRESERVED

December 18th, 2006
The campaign to save the Jimna Fire Tower could not have received a better Christmas Gift, with the news that a new engineering report commissioned by the Queensland Heritage Council has confirmed that the tower does not have the same extent of structural damage as first reported, and can be restored. Although this is great news for the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group JFTAG and it’s supporters, there are a number of issues to be resolved before we can start popping champagne corks.
Matters such as Future Ownership, Risk Assessment, Public Safety issues, Infrastructure Planning, Structural Design, Final Costings, Grant and Funding opportunities, and a feasible Management Business Plan, can now be addressed from a much clearer and more positive platform, in year 2007, than where we were six months ago. Consultation on relevant issues shall begin ,at a proposed meeting set down for Friday 19/01/07 between JFTAG and Forestry Plantations Queensland, the current owners of the Jimna Fire Tower.

It is quite possible that the Jimna Fire Tower would not be with us today, had it not been for the few initial believers that now make up the JFTAG committee, the immediate local public response, followed by strong local business support, and then the ever increasing interest shown by Tourist Operators and stakeholders throughout
