HELP PRESERVE AUSTRALIA‘S HERITAGE
After news broke of plans to delist the Heritage Listed Jimna Fire Tower from the Queensland Heritage Register in early 2006, the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) was formed because of the nonexistence of public consultation or prior notice of the Queensland Governments intentions.
This iconic tower, the tallest of it’s type in the southern hemisphere, must be preserved for posterity. The Queensland Government has failed to recognise its duty to save this important piece of history for future generations to enjoy. Unless the people of Australia speak up now, yet another significant symbol of Australian Heritage will be lost forever. Time is of the essence.
After exhaustive consultation with professional advisors, it was concluded that the only way to preserve the Jimna Fire Tower for eternity was for it to be redeveloped into a self-funding tourist attraction/destination. This concept has never been evaluated despite the tower attracting more than 30,000 visitors annually before closure. Consequently, the following mission statement was adopted.
TO ENSURE THAT EVERY POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE IS EVALUATED
BEFORE CONDEMNING THE JIMNA FIRE TOWER TO DEMOLITION
With the sale of Queensland Forestry assets currently underway, JFTAG sees that a window of possible opportunity has opened, for the redevelopment of the tower to be taken on by a private enterprise, a public corporation, or similar.
To move forward with this objective, JFTAG must demonstrate broad public support and generate vital financial resources.
